The situation on the eastern front of Ukraine has “significantly deteriorated over the last few days”said Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief, Oleksandr Syrsky, on Saturday April 13, noting a “intensification” of the offensive of the Russian army, which is pushing in particular in the direction of Chassiv Yar. “This is primarily due to a significant intensification of the enemy’s offensive after the presidential elections in Russia”which took place in mid-March, he wrote on Telegram.

Russian army attacks Ukrainian positions in Lyman and Bakhmut sectors “with assault groups supported by armored vehicles”as well as in Pokrovsk, he said. “This is made possible by the hot and dry weather, which has made most open areas accessible to tanks”, explained Oleksandr Syrsky. Despite losses, the Russian army deploys “new armored units”which allows it to garner “tactical successes”. The Russians have intensified their pressure around Chassiv Yar in recent days, with this key eastern town now “under constant fire”, according to kyiv.

Anti-aircraft defense awaiting Western help

According to Oleksandr Syrsky, the areas “the most problematic” were reinforced, in particular with anti-aircraft defense means. But for how long ? “The question of technical superiority over the enemy in the field of high-tech weapons arises again”he said. “Only in this way can we defeat a greater enemy,” added the Ukrainian commander, judging that it was also necessary “improve the quality of training of military personnel”.

For several months, kyiv has been asking its Western allies for more munitions and air defense systems. But aid is running out due to political blockages in Washington, forcing Ukrainian soldiers to save their ammunition. The Ukrainian army is also struggling to recruit, facing larger and better-equipped Russian forces.

Faced with the American Congress, which is still struggling to agree on an aid package for Ukraine, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that his country “would lose the war” without the help of the Americans And that “other states will be attacked” in the event of defeat against Russia.
