Two days ago, the referendum in New Caledonia saw the “no“win by the overwhelming majority. Special Envoy France Televisions in Nouméa, Hugo Capelli deciphers the current atmosphere on the archipelago.
According to Hugo Capelli, the atmosphere is very calm on the archipelago and no demonstration has been reported. The pro-France supporters claim their victory without celebrating it. Indeed, the separatists overwhelmingly rejected the ballot respecting the instructions given by their leaders.
The separatists did not hide their anger after the announcement of the result by Emmanuel Macron. The latter have, through a press release, announced their refusal to consider this ballot as legitimate and have announced that they do not want to accept it. The separatists chose not to go to meet Sebastian Lecornu, Minister of Overseas Territories, and present in Nouméa. They want to wait for the presidential election to start new negotiations with the state. For the moment, the dialogue is broken while presidential candidates like Jean-Luc Mélenchon and Fabien Roussel have made the Caledonian questionborn a stake in their campaigns.
