The strong pessimism of the French
Political scientist Jérôme Fourquet judges “the socially inflammable situation”. Co-author of France before our eyes (Editions du Seuil), he observes a strong pessimism among the French, “The highest” for 25 years, a consequence of inflation and the energy crisis.
“The French are a little on the lookout. Many of them were able to go on vacation and these vacations were a bit of an enchanted parenthesis, after the ordeals of Covid-19 and when many of our fellow citizens had in mind the clouds gathering on the horizon for the next few months”explains Jérôme Fourquet.
“Over a period of more than 25 years, we are on the highest rate of pessimism.”

“We are at more than 75% of the population who declared themselves, at the time of the start of the school year, to be quite pessimistic about the coming months, because of purchasing power. And we also have a significant part of the population who is very aware climate issues”add the director of the “Opinion and business strategies” department of Ifop.
Prioritize reforms
Asked about the multiple reforms announced by the executive, on pensions, unemployment insurance, end of life, immigration, Jérôme Fourquet believes that he “we should prioritize these actions and these speeches” to avoid a “dispersion”. The question that arises is that of “cap for this very special five-year term, where the president does not have a majority in the Assembly”explains the political scientist.
