Key work by Michel Tremblay, the mythical play The sisters-in-law will be adapted for the cinema by René Richard Cyr, who will direct his first feature film.
Since its first version in 1968 at the Théâtre du Rideau Vert, Michel Tremblay’s play has had several incarnations on stage, in Quebec and elsewhere. In the early 2010s, the same René Richard Cyr enjoyed great success by adapting The sisters-in-law in a musical, with the help of Daniel Bélanger. It is this version that will be brought to the big screen. The date of the start of filming and that of the theatrical release have not been communicated for the moment.
Presented as a “musical drama”, a genre very little exploited in Quebec cinema, the film sisters-in-law is one of the nine projects selected Thursday by the Society for the Development of Cultural Enterprises (SODEC) as part of its production assistance program.
Other films that will be financially supported by the state corporation also include a retelling of the 1986 youth film Bach and Bootieone of the most memorable of the Tales for All series.
André Forcier’s new film also received SODEC approval on Thursday, as did the second feature film by director Lyne Charlebois, who returns to the seventh art, 14 years after the success of Borderline.
