The essayist Zineb El Rhazoui was stripped of her Simone Veil prize, awarded by the Ile-de-France region, due to statements “outrageous and shocking” on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, announced the president of the community, Valérie Pécresse, Sunday December 10. Nominated by the public “Parisian of the year” in 2019 for her fight against Islamism, she was notably criticized “his retweet of a parallel between Auschwitz and the Israeli response against Hamas terrorists in Gaza”explains the elected Republican on Facebook.

The words of the ex-journalist Charlie Hebdo “do not seem to us to be absolutely consistent with the message of peace carried throughout her life by Simone Veil, who played an essential role in Franco-German reconciliation”details Valérie Pécresse, who decided to withdraw this prize “in agreement” with the two sons of the former minister who survived Auschwitz.

On the social network X, Zineb El Rhazoui took note of this decision by updating her biography, now presenting herself as “2019 Simone Veil Prize / withdrawn in 2023 for denouncing the Israeli massacres in Gaza”. “I honor Simone Veil’s legacy more than ever”she had tweetedin response to a grandson of the ex-deportee. “The Simone Veil Prize means (…) defending human beings against mass crime perpetrated by any fanaticized regime”she said.
