In France, there is a shortage of sunflower oil as a result of the war in Ukraine. Some manufacturers had to improvise to change their recipe, Thursday, April 14.

For a good puff pastry, you need fat. In a factory in Bas-Rhin, 20 tons are needed every day. Usually, margarine made with sunflower oil imported from Ukraine is used. But, without a supplier in recent weeks, the recipe had to be adapted. “Our teams have worked with our suppliers to replace, substitute, sunflower oil with rapeseed oil”explains Cédric Marchipont, Director of Cérélia Operations.

The temporary solution was found urgently. But, the packaging, already printed, indicates sunflower oil. “We should reprint all the packaging, but we won’t have time”, confides Guillaume Réveilhac, founding president of the group. The pasta still contains a little sunflower oil. The company therefore has the right to market them in these packages. Some manufacturers have asked the authorities for an exemption so as not to change the packaging each time. They want to be able to add a label indicating “vegetable fats” without specifying the exact source.
