The shortage of manpower does not spare the education sector

Over the past few days, a lot of information has been shared regarding planning for the next school year, particularly for teaching staff assignment sessions.

Rest assured, all school service centers (CSS) are very aware of the number of positions that remain to be filled for the start of the school year, both for teachers and in other employment categories.

Indeed, preparation for the start of the school year begins at the end of the student registration process. This exercise allows the CSS to know, from the beginning of spring, the clientele that will attend each of its schools and thus anticipate needs. It must be adapted continuously until the start of the school year, in particular due to moves, parental leave, disabilities and retirements. The picture of the situation therefore fluctuates constantly during this period.

This complex planning is marked by national agreements and is carried out in conjunction with several departments of each CSS, as well as with the management of the establishment. The information is also disseminated to local unions throughout the process.

This year, the assignment sessions planned for the national agreements were to be held no later than August 8. Setting the same date for the entire school network allowed some teachers to find out their assignment earlier than before, as well as to paint a preliminary (and partial) national picture of vacant positions.

This first step is, however, reserved for certain categories of teachers, depending on their employment status. Thus, the date of August 8 does not signal the end of recruitment. Assignment activities continue in order to assign a position to other teachers. These sessions are held continuously until the start of the school year and allow vacant positions to be gradually filled.

In education as elsewhere

Several initiatives are deployed by the CSS and their federation to promote career opportunities in education, such as open recruitment days and the hiring of teachers from abroad.

Other means are also used to attract talent, such as posting job offers on specialized platforms and social media, holding information sessions at various universities and participating in job fairs. Recruitment and staffing processes continue intensively throughout the school year.

The education sector is not spared from the labour shortage. In order to attract new candidates, every effort must be made to promote education and the workers in the various employment groups that work there. In fact, every day, school network staff work hard to provide stimulating learning conditions that are adapted to the needs of students.

The extraordinary happens every day in our schools. It is high time to shine the spotlight on the best of education and be proud of our public school.
