(Comment published online in reaction to the column “Glory to asphalt” by François William Croteau, The DutyAugust 21, 2024).
About every two years, two or three holes appear in the asphalt on my street.
These holes force drivers to slow down to 30 km/h in a 30 km/h zone. How horrible for them! At this speed, they can easily avoid them or drive over them without damaging their shiny car, well washed by the rain and shining in the sun.
I call my borough every time, imploring them not to fix these holes. Shortly after, the workers arrive to fix them, and the speed dance and the time war resume. And so motorists arrive at the mandatory stop at the end of the street four seconds faster, despite the speed bumps, which should become camel humps to have an effect on the shiny SUVs and protect the many children. I will always express to the workers my sadness to see them fix these holes.
I dream of a street full of holes in the asphalt to absorb the heat of the sun and the torrential rains, and of a district impervious to the complaints of motorists who have run out of speed.
