Wednesday, January 26, Emmanuel Macron spoke about the shooting March 26, 1962 in Algiers (Algeria). He describes this act as “unforgivable”.
This is a strong statement from Emmanuel Macron. After the pardon for the Harkis in September 2021, the Head of State this time addressed the Pieds-noirs, the French repatriated from Algeria. During a speech which took place on Wednesday January 26, he returned to the shooting of March 26, 1962 in Algiers, where a dozen supporters of French Algeria were killed by the army. The President of the Republic mentioned the trauma of thousands of families and described as“unforgivable” this massacre.
It is a tragedy passed over in silence and a strong gesture passed on to the returnees from Algeria. “Sixty years later, France today recognizes this tragedy. And I say it loud and clear, the massacre of March 26, 1962 is unforgivable for the Republic”, said Emmanuel Macron. This marks a new step towards forgiveness between France and the Pieds-noirs.
