The shepherds’ festival in Aramits and the cheese of Sébastien Lembeye

In September every year, the shepherds and their flocks return to the village of Aramits for a joyful bazaar for a festive event that perpetuates a tradition shared for 40 years. The shepherds’ festival is a dog competition very popular with participants and the public, a traditional song competition and a cheese competition, of course. Come and discover the life of a shepherd and how cheese is made.

The Aramits cheese dairy is a family and artisanal business, producing PDO Ossau-Iraty sheep’s cheese from raw milk but not only. Sébastien Lembeye perpetuates the traditional production of cheese, but ripening is a subtle skill.

At the moment for Sebastien Lembeye it’s quite calm, on the other hand for the shepherds who will arrive there is a lot of work. It will be necessary to shear the ewes, install the sheepfolds and watch over the pregnant ewes. Sebastien Lembeye brought in the Swiss to install his cheeses on wood, the advantage is that wood transmits to young cheeses the flora of a matured cheese, a guarantee of taste, he tells us. The shepherds’ festival is one more opportunity to taste the cheeses of the Aramits cheese dairy you have 3 days from September 16 to 18, 2022.
