In the aftermath of the victory of the “no” in the self-determination referendum in New Caledonia, the separatists, who had called not to participate, announced in a press release Monday, December 13 that they “do not recognize the legitimacy and validity of this ballot which was confiscated from them”.
Marked by a record abstention after the call for separatists to shun the ballot, this third and last referendum provided for by the Nouméa accords in 1998 was won by the pro-France with 96.5% of the vote, against 3.5% to the yes to independence.

For the independence party FLNKS and the nationalists, “this referendum does not comply with the spirit and the letter of the Noumea Accord, the decolonization process, and also does not comply with the UN resolutions which included New Caledonia on the list of countries to decolonize “.
“The Lecornu calendar is now turned upside down. The CSI-NP is no longer committed to it. The 18 months announced cannot begin with a French government at the end of its mandate”, underline the separatists. The FLNKS and the nationalists had already warned last week that they were rejecting any meeting with Overseas Minister Sébastien Lecornu, who arrived in Noumea on Friday.
