On Monday, October 30, the Senate adopted a bill to prohibit inclusive writing. During the day, Emmanuel Macron positioned himself against this use.

Emmanuel Macron’s sentence in Villers-Cotterêts (Aisne), Monday October 30, during the inauguration of the Cité internationale de la langue française, did not go unnoticed. “In this language [française, NDLR], the masculine makes the neutral. We don’t need periods in the middle of words”, declared the head of theEtat. The speech quickly provoked a reaction from the political class, particularly on the left.

Restricted tool in 2017

The controversy took place at the same time as senators were debating a bill, from the Les Républicains (LR) group, aimed at banning inclusive writing. For its rapporteur, the objective is to avoid politicizing the language. “Language is a tool for expressing oneself and should not be the object of combat”says Cédric Vial, senator of Savoie.

Since 2017, a circular from Edouard Philippe has already restricted its use. This project aims to extend this ban. The proposal was largely adopted on Monday, in a Senate dominated by the right. For the moment, this law will not go any further. Its inclusion on the agenda of the Assembly is not planned.
