Secularism: the Senate recommends better supervision of school trips

In a report, the Senate recommends that the wearing of ostentatious religious symbols should be extended “to any activity organized” by the school, which also concerns school outings.
Since 2004, it has been forbidden to come to school with an ostentatious religious symbol, in establishments, but also during school trips. A Senate report recommends that this ban must be generalized “to any activity organized by the educational institution, including outside school hours”. Late trips to the theater, school trips or even orientation forums during the weekend could be affected.
The 2004 law not clear enough according to directors
This recommendation is well received by establishment directors, who believe that the 2004 law is not clear enough. “When there is confusion, there can be dispute, there can be dispute”, indicates Didier Georges of the national union of management personnel of National Education. In November 2023, 66 reports were recorded in France for wearing religious attire or symbols at school. A figure that has fallen sharply since the assassination of Professor Dominique Bernard in October 2023.
