The Secret Service, which is responsible for protecting high-ranking American figures, has rejected requests to strengthen Donald Trump’s security in the past, American media reported on Sunday, July 21. This revelation comes more than a week after the assassination attempt against the former Republican president, while criticism is growing over possible failures and human failings.

The Secret Service has failed to provide certain resources requested by Donald Trump’s campaign team over the past two years, one of its spokespersons has admitted to American media, following revelations by the Washington Postnotably citing a lack of resources. These requests did not concern the campaign rally during which Donald Trump was targeted by gunfire.

“In cases where specialized units or Secret Service resources were not provided, the agency made modifications to ensure the safety of the protected person.”a Secret Service spokesman said in a statement sent to AFP. Local sniper teams had been deployed when the Secret Service could not provide them, according to CNN, which cited unnamed officials.

The protective service initially denied rejecting any request for increased security. An independent investigation has been ordered to shed light on the case and determine how a gunman ended up on the roof of a building less than 150 meters from the podium where the Republican candidate was speaking in Pennsylvania. The director of the prestigious unit, Kimberly Cheatle, is due to explain herself to the US Congress on Monday.
