Full room, white-hot. It is in this atmosphere that three supporters of Jean-Luc Mélenchon arrived in Anglet, this Wednesday, February 16. MPs Adrien Quatennens, Alexis Corbière and Sabine Rubin held a meeting for the LFI candidate, in front of 200 to 300 people, now just over 50 days from the first round of the presidential election. And this while the left seems in full disunity.
The theme of purchasing power hammered home for more than half an hour
During the 1h30 of the meeting, the first half hour was devoted to the theme of purchasing power. From the presentations, the opposition municipal councilor of Anglet, Sandra Pereira-Ostanel, insisted on this theme, in particular the price of real estate, a pregnant subject in the Basque Country, with the 40% increase in prices in a few years in some cities. “I risk being evicted from my accommodationsays Nathalie de Cambo-les-Bains, and since I don’t earn enough I’m not sure to find accommodation now. So I ask for help, but I earn too much to get any.” “Frankly, I’m afraid when my children are going to leave the house, that they won’t find an apartment in the region“, adds Olivier, from the Landes.
Opposite, the team of Jean-Luc Mélenchon brandishes the supervision of rents. “In an emergency, we could decide to freeze the price of rentssays Adrien Quatennens, wherever necessary, wherever prices inflate considerably“. This is one of the measures proposed by Jean-Luc Mélenchon, which would be done, in his program, through regional land agencies, while remaining unclear on up to what amount these rents would be blocked.
In the line of sight: the second round … in full disunity of the left
Supporters of Jean-Luc Mélenchon arrived in Anglet with the results of the latest Elabe poll : 10.5% of voting intentions in the first round, which places the candidate ahead of all the other representatives of the left. But behind Valérie Pécresse, Eric Zemmour, Marine Le Pen, and Emmanuel Macron. Which earned a call from Alexis Corbière at the very end of the meeting: “to all socialist sympathizers, environmentalist sympathizers, communists, of Christiane Taubira or whatever, what we did in 2017, if we do it again this year, then we will be in the second round of the presidential election.”
After the audience’s applause, Olivier is confident: “for me it will be in the second round, no doubt about it” Same opinion for Ingrid, but is less obvious for Nathalie: “to get there, you would have to look for all the abstainers.“As for the deputy Sabine Rubin, to arrive at the union of the left, we will have to wait.”This is not topical there, Jean-Luc Mélenchon was very clear on this subject. And if we are in the second round, there is the possibility of coming together around common issues.”
