Reconciling with French, maths and studies: these are the objectives of second chance schools, while 100,000 students left the school system without any qualifications. Report from Nice.

The day begins at the second chance school in Nice (Alpes-Maritimes). The students are between 16 and 25 years old. They all left the school system without training and without a diploma. Among them is Hugo, 17 years old. It’s his first week in class. “I got kicked out everywhere”, he specifies. Savannah also had a difficult journey. At 16, she returned to school. “Following harassment, I stopped classes. I had a blockage, I couldn’t do anything”she explains.

A structuring framework

Upon arriving here, Savannah and Hugo signed a contract. Funded by the State and local authorities, the second chance school operates like a business. All students are paid, schedules must be respected. There is also a hierarchy and internships must be found. From the start, students are supported individually. Throughout the training, Pascal Ayache will be Hugo’s referent. “These are young people who are in great search of a structuring framework, not rigid, but structuring”he explains.
