The search resumed Sunday morning to find a one-month-old baby washed away by the waters of the Mille-Îles River in Laval.
The baby has been missing since his mother’s vehicle plunged into the river on Friday, around 4:15 p.m., in the Laval-sur-le-Lac sector. The mother and a 4-year-old girl, who were also in the vehicle, were rescued.
Just like the day before, teams from the Sûreté du Québec are contributing to the search.
“The Sûreté du Québec is on the scene with the helicopter, then the divers. In addition, we have a research specialist and his team who are there to coordinate. There is also an argo amphibious type boat (ATV) that will also be on the water from the Sûreté du Québec,” explained Constable Érika Landry, spokesperson for the Service de police de Laval (SPL).
Laval police and firefighters are also on the scene to comb the body of water and the banks, using various boats and the dog handler.
“We ask citizens who live on the banks of the Mille-Îles River to check the banks,” repeated Agent Landry, pointing out that the boy’s body may have traveled several kilometres.
The voluntary gesture hypothesis to be confirmed
It was still uncertain on Sunday morning whether the voluntary gesture hypothesis could explain the tragedy or at least be excluded from the scenarios examined.
The 40-year-old woman has still not been seen by the police.
“The mother is still hospitalized. She is still in a state where she is not able to be met. However, the little girl is doing well. She was discharged from hospital late Friday evening,” the SPL spokeswoman said.
It was a call to 9-1-1 on Friday, around 4:45 p.m., which reported the presence of a vehicle partially submerged in the river near the intersection between rue des Érables and chemin Saint-Antoine, in the limit of the Laval-sur-le-Lac and Laval-Ouest districts.
Crimes against the person investigators from the Laval Police Department are continuing their investigation to try to understand how the vehicle ended up in the water.
“All the hypotheses will be verified at this level,” said Agent Landry.
