Seven years ago, the kidnapping of 300 young girls from a high school in Nigeria sparked an international mobilization. Since then, kidnappings have increased in the country. Investigation.
It is a fear that the people of northern Nigeria live with on a daily basis: child abduction. Almost every day, young Nigerians are kidnapped by armed groups. In 2021, more than 1,700 have undergone this treatment. Videos are then sent to parents demanding ransoms. “When I think about what happened, I feel like it was yesterday. I’m still traumatized, I’m really not well.”, testifies a victim.
A series of kidnappings that began in 2014, when 300 high school girls were kidnapped by the Boko Haram group. Today, the kidnappers have taken their example from this event, and are ready to do anything, even to execute the hostages. “If they were human they couldn’t take people like that”, denounces the mother of a young girl thus killed. The authorities claim, for their part, to do everything possible to prevent this kind of kidnapping. But the police officers on the ground confide in their dismay, while the kidnappers’ weapons are more effective.
