This is a first for Gambians. The Scorpions, who had never participated in the CAN, are in the round of 16 on Monday January 24 (5 p.m.) against Guinea in Bafoussam, Cameroon.
Qualified with style, Tom Saintfiet’s men have not lost a single match in the competition. During the group matches, they notably beat Tunisia (1-0) thanks to a goal from Ablie Jallow, in stoppage time.
Opposite, Guinea did not reassure during their last group match against Zimbabwe. Defeated 2-1, the teammates of Naby Keita (Liverpool) won only one match in this CAN 2022, against Malawi thanks to a goal from Toulouse Issiaga Sylla.
With also Ilax Moriba (Leipzig) and Mohamed Bayo (Clermont) in their ranks, the national Syli is however the favorite. But the Scorpions have already shown that they are capable of stinging their opponents.
