Scallops are back on market stalls in Brittany and Normandy. Report from Dieppe, in Seine Maritime.
Scallop fishing has been open since October 2. On the morning of Wednesday October 4, at the fish market in Dieppe (Seine-Maritime), the first ones were on sale. White gold at 6 euros per kilo, for whole shells. For the kilo of nuts, it costs 35 euros. The prices are rather similar to past years, according to Véronique Gaillard, seller. “Each year, we start in a price range equivalent to this year. The further we go through the month of December, the more the shells will increase”she explains.
A “not quite amazing” catch
The first shells arrived during the night. The season starts slowly. “The fishing is not quite amazing compared to what was announced upstream”, comments Laetitia Bourcier, saleswoman. The first trawlers to return are about to leave. By the end of the week, the sea should calm down and the harvest should improve.
