In the Var, there is a jewel of biodiversity, fragile. Thanks to the coastal conservatory, the threat of erosion is receding on the Vieux Salins d’Hyères.

Many birds have made it their cozy nest. The Vieux Salins d’Hyères (Var) are a jewel of biodiversity, where 260 species are observed throughout the year. The black stilt is one of them. An ornithological richness which can be explained in particular by the variety of habitats on offer. “And this diversity of landscapes allows for a diversity of species”says Matthieu Lasceve, biodiversity project manager for the Toulon Provence Méditerranée Metropolis.

The risk linked to erosion has now receded

A setting with a fragile balance. Long exploited for its salt, the site has been the property of the Conservatoire du Littoral since 2001. The decision was quickly taken to remove the rockfill installed along the saline, which has the effect of reinforcing the erosion of the beaches. 12 years after the first works, the risk linked to erosion has now disappeared. Without this supply channel, a veritable umbilical cord, the entire Vieux Salins ecosystem would be disrupted. An exceptional natural area, which makes Vieux Salins one of the most remarkable wetlands on the Mediterranean coast.
