Sales of laying hens have increased in recent years. These animals provide free eggs and reduce organic waste.

In Arbresle (Rhône), three hens are the delight of a family. Gilles Rougerie, retired, has been raising his own chickens for six months. “Now we have almost three eggs every day”, he rejoices. Home chicken coops are very popular. In a pet store, sales of laying hens have doubled in two years. During the months of March, April and May, “we are going to have about 80 sales every 15 days”says Laetitia Roux, manager of the Les Jardins des Monts d’Or pet store.

In Givors (Rhône), the community distributed around 200 chickens to residents who wanted them. “They still eat a lot of vegetable waste, pasta”, observes Patrick Veyrand, a resident of Givors who has succeeded in reducing his waste. In one year, the municipality estimates that it has reduced the quantity of organic waste in the bins by 36 tonnes. Next year, the city will distribute other hens.
