Sales of air conditioners are increasing sharply in the face of rising heat. However, the race for cooling has consequences for the environment.
With the high temperatures, especially in Paris, many people are looking for coolness. In this appliance store in the capital, sales of air conditionerss fly away. “This year it started earlier. We fhas twice the volume of last year in terms of sales”, explains Abdelhamid Gallas, sales manager of Darty Beaugrenelle. “The fan is not enough, we are looking for something more powerful to cool the whole room”, advances a consumer.
Air conditioning has adverse effects on the climate
Yet air conditioning only makes global warming worse. “The principle of air conditioning is that we take hot air that is inside, and we expel it to the outside. In large cities like Paris, this increases the island effect urban heat”, explains Laura Brimont, consultant “Lifestyles in transition”. The ecological impact begins to concern the inhabitants. “If every citizen of Paris starts doing it, it will becomego what?”asks a local resident.
