the salaries of French teachers still lagging behind, according to the OECD

The OECD (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development) publishes Monday, October 3 its annual report on education in the most developed countries. The salaries of French teachers are, according to this comparative study that franceinfo was able to consult, still lagging behind, even if there is better: lMid-career teachers, with 15 years of experience, have seen their salaries increase by 4% between 2015 and 2021. An index point thaw has been there.

Thus, last year, the salaries of French professors in college were 16% lower than the OECD average. An even greater gap in elementary education (from CP to CM2) since in 2020-2021, French teachers – with 15 years of experience – received 19% less than the OECD average (twice as much than their German neighbours). Regarding high school, salaries were equivalent in 2019. “Statutory salaries for teachers in France remain below the OECD average at every stage of the career at all levels of education except pre-elementary”ensures the annual report of the OECD on education and wages in the most developed countries.

The gap narrows a little at the start of their career, under the effect of the attractiveness bonus set up by the former minister Jean-Michel Blanquer: 180 euros more per month for new teachers. Problem: it is a degressive bonus, which teachers no longer receive after 20 years in the profession.

And this is precisely what the OECD notes in its report: yes, the beginnings of a career must be revalued to encourage new vocations; but once recruited, to keep them for a long time, it is necessary to offer promotions to teachers. Thus, salary progression from the start of a career to the top of the salary scale is, on average, higher in France than in OECD countries (between 72 and 77% depending on the level of education taught). , compared to 60-64% on average in OECD countries). The report also points out that it is necessary, in France, 35 years of experience for teachers to move from starting salary to the highest salary, compared to 26 years on average in OECD countries.
