It is the European Union’s highest distinction for human rights. The European Parliament’s Sakharov Prize was awarded to Jina Mahsa Amini and the “Women, Life, Freedom” movement in Iran, announced Parliament President Roberta Metsola on Thursday 19 October.

Jina Mahsa Amini died on September 16, 2022 at the age of 22, after her arrest by the morality police who accused her of having violated the strict dress code imposed on women. The death of this Iranian Kurd triggered, that year, a vast protest movement in Iran, of which “Women, Life, Freedom” is the emblematic slogan.
