the Saint-Étienne International Design Biennial questions the world according to

Bifurcationsthis is the theme chosen for this 12th edition of the Saint-Étienne International Design Biennial, an event that has become a must in the cultural landscape and which is to be discovered until July 31. A theme chosen before the pandemic and which resonates perfectly with current questions. Between the health crisis, conflicts and climate change, our society is at a crossroads. Which road(s) to choose? The 200 invited designers and artists had food for thought.

Among the highlights, the exhibition presented at the City of Design, At Home, a panorama of our domestic lives. With the Covid crisis, our interiors have become our homes, offices, classrooms, sports halls, cinemas and restaurants: an evolution of our domestic life which raises questions about the next world. The exhibition is not centered on the health crisis but allows visitors to reflect on the meaning of the term “housing” today, in a post-Covid future.

Another topic in the air, the place of the car in our cities and our lives. This is the subject of another long-awaited exhibition, Autofiction, a biography of the automotive object. Presented as a documentary exhibition, this meeting questions the contradictions between a need for mobility for a large part of Humanity and the need for a change in our way of consuming.

In addition to these seven major exhibitions, around 150 events and activities are planned for 4 months throughout the city of Saint-Etienne. From public spaces to city museums, the Biennale is a popular meeting place. Designers are an integral part of this changing world. Urban furniture, architectural trends, everyday objects, their creations are inspired by the world in which we live and they also try to anticipate the incessant changes, sometimes sudden and precipitous, of your more so peaceful lives.
