He was the last major figure in New Wave cinema. Director Jean-Luc Godard has died at the age of 91. In 1960, he shook up the codes of narrative, image and editing with his film “A bout de souffle”.

Who better than Jean-Luc Godard himself to announce his own cinema, which was called “Nouvelle vague”? This will mark history. “I don’t make movies, I make movies”he said. “He didn’t see himself as a filmmaker, he saw himself as a researcher, as someone who had to push the envelope as far as possible for the world to change”reveals Macha Méril, actress.

Handheld camera, improvised dialogue and social subject, it’s a new approach that appeals to the public and the actors. “I believe that in cinema, you need a lot of spontaneity and with Godard, it’s very easy to be able to do that”, said Jean-Paul Belmondo. In the mid-1960s, Godard shot a mythical scene with Brigitte Bardot. Then, it’s a change of tone at the end of the 60s. His film The Chinese takes more political postures and prefigures the student revolution. In 1968, he rose up against the Cannes festival. He will remain one of the filmmakers of our heritage.
