This is a new advance by the Russian army against Ukrainian troops in difficulty. On Monday April 22, Russia claimed the capture of a village in eastern Ukraine. The Russian Defense Ministry said it had “released” Novomykhaïlivka, about thirty kilometers southwest of Donetsk.
Novomykhaïlivka is located not far from Vougledar, a town at the junction of the southern and eastern fronts that Russia has been trying to conquer for two years. Russian forces regularly claim the capture of villages while the Ukrainian army faces a shortage of ammunition and new recruits. Moscow, which seized Avdiïvka in February, is now aiming the strategic city of Chassiv Iar.
kyiv expects “a difficult time” on the front
Russian army “conducts a complex operation”the head of Ukrainian military intelligence admitted on Monday. “IThere will be a difficult period, in mid-May and early June” on the Ukrainian front, warned Kyrylo Budanov in an interview with the BBC Ukrainian service. “We think that a rather difficult situation awaits us in the near future. But we must understand that it will not be catastrophic.”
kyiv now fears an even more powerful Russian summer offensive. At the end of March, the commander of the Ukrainian ground forces, Oleksandr Pavlyuk, judged “possible” such a scenario. He also admitted in mid-April that the situation on the eastern front had “considerably deteriorated”.
