“The Mediterranean rumbles. Like a dormant volcano, she is uncompromising, excessive in her outbursts, rebellious…“These words are those of the director of the festival, Christophe Leparc. For its 44th edition, Cinemed is relaying the rumblings of the Mediterranean until October 29 with more than 200 films screened, meetings, master classes, tributes and retrospectives.
“Cinemed mixes the magic of cinema and the soul of the Mediterranean, with its contradictions between machismo and the rights of women, Jews and Muslims, the issues of migration, youth, clandestinity“, said the president of the festival, the former mayor of Palermo (Sicily) Leoluca Orlando, during the presentation of this 2022 edition.
Highly anticipated because lost sight of since accusations of sexual assault, dismissed in 2020, and the eventful projection of Mektoub my love – Intermezzo in Cannes in 2019, never released in theaters, the Franco-Tunisian director Adbellatif Kechiche will be present “for 24 or 48 hours”, indicated Christophe Leparc.
Only certainty, the director of The Life of Adele, Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2013, which will be the subject of a retrospective, will host a master class open to the public on Friday 28 October. “For the rest, we do not know if he will be present at screenings“, added the director of Cinemed.
Cinemed is also an opportunity to highlight young directors of short films or what are called pocket films, shot on smartphones. A special screening was organized before the official curtain raiser of the festival. A France 3 Occitanie team was able to meet some of them.
The festival will present on the big screen Lost ball 2, a few days before its release on Netflix. In 2020, the first part of this muscular French feature film had accumulated more than 37 million views worldwide after its first month of operation.
The official competition jury will be chaired by former Manchester United star turned film and theater actor Eric Cantona, born in Marseille, and his wife, actress and director Rachida Brakni, born to Algerian parents. That is to say if the Mediterranean is represented.
Documentalist Simone Bitton, who has been exploring the Israeli-Palestinian conflict for over 30 years, will also be a guest at the festival. The Spanish actress and director Icíar Bollaín will present his new film The Repentants (Maixabel), inspired by a true story between the widow of a politician assassinated by ETA and two of his assassins.
Finally, the “young guard” of a Georgian cinema with a rich heritage will be honoured, as will the committed work of Italian filmmaker Francesco Rosi (The Mattei Affair), who would have been 100 years old this year.
