In the event of victory in the European elections, head of the list RN Jordan Bardella has announced that he will request the dissolution of the National Assembly. A proposal that makes MPs cringe.

Jordan Bardella is on the ground on Wednesday May 1, at a meeting in Perpignan. The head of the RN list is credited with 30% of voting intentions in the polls, far ahead of the Renaissance candidate, Valérie Hayer who is stagnating around 16%. A favorite status that he intends to use to put pressure on the majority: in the event of victory, Jordan Bardella insists that he will request the dissolution of the National Assembly, from the evening of June 9.

“Populism”, “shortcut”…

An announcement in the form of a campaign promise which annoys the Assembly, starting with Bruno Milienne, spokesperson for Modem. “So Mr. Bardella is not campaigning for the Europeans”, he tackles, and therefore there is no reason to prepare to campaign, he tells us. Jordan Bardella seems to have forgotten one point: only the President of the Republic can dissolve the National Assembly. It is therefore a lie to the voters, he believes. “It’s the very rule of populism, you throw around big slogans making people believe that it’s possible when in reality, it’s not possible!”he snaps.

It is also a way, he explains, to divert attention from substantive issues. An opinion that some Republicans seem to share, such as MP Fabien Di Filippo. “It’s a somewhat easy shortcut because once we don’t agree with the policy of the head of state, there are still a dozen lists behind. We all want to project ourselves into post-Macron, but on what basis?he says.

As for Manuel Bompard, coordinator of France Insoumise, he recalls that his group did not wait for an election to try to bring down the government. “We have tabled more than twenty motions of censure since the last legislative elections, so, obviously, we consider that the question of returning to the polls has been raised”, believes Manuel Bompard. The RN ensures that its 577 candidates are ready in the event of early elections.
