While 90% of French people buy fruit juice, will we soon run out of orange concentrate? Production is currently in free fall due to the vagaries of the weather.

Drinking orange juice in the morning is a reflex for many French people. Today, they consume an average of 18 liters per person per year. He may soon be missing. Harvests are increasingly weak in the world, due to bacteria and increasingly frequent climatic disturbances. 95% of the harvest of Vernon C. Hollingsworth, owner of an orange grove in Arcadia, Florida (USA), was wiped out by Hurricane Ian in September 2022.

A significant increase in the cost of orange concentrates

In ten years, American production has fallen considerably, dropping from 5.4 million tonnes in 2013 to 650,000 tonnes in 2023. Only Brazil, the world’s largest producer, is still posting good harvests, with more than 10 million tonnes in 2023. The prices of orange concentrate are thus increasing all over the world. In a factory in the Bas-Rhin, manufacturing is increasingly difficult. “We bought our ton of orange concentrate at 2,400 euros, today we are at 3,400”, explains Jean-Luc Etter, director of “Alsace fruit juices”. These difficulties could continue for several more months on the market.
