The right confirms its lead. The party of former Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis easily won the legislative elections in Greece on Sunday June 25, according to exit polls. This score should ensure him an absolute majority to train “a stable government”.
New Democracy (ND), in power from 2019 to the end of May, would win between 40% and 44% of the vote ahead of the left-wing Syriza party of Alexis Tsipras, which would obtain between 16% and 19% of the vote, i.e. a score even lower than in the previous elections on May 21 (20%), according to polls published at the close of the polls by television channels.
A “bonus” of seats for the leading party
Kyriakos Mitsotakis won a big victory five weeks ago by winning 40.79% of the vote, twice as many as Syriza. But this advance had not brought him the absolute majority required to form a government without having to forge an alliance.
The leader of New Democracy (ND) had ruled out building a coalition and called for new elections, counting for that on a voting system which this time grants the party that came out on top a “bonus” of up to 50 seats.
