This is a victory for former cancer patients. Thursday, February 3, the deputies and senators decided to reduce the period of the right to be forgotten, from ten to five years. It will therefore no longer be compulsory to declare cancer for the insurance of a bank loan after this period.

Becoming an owner was Anne Danjou’s dream. But after two cancers and cured for less than ten years, she has the obligation to declare her old illnesses. Considered too risky, her file was refused by six banks. By calling on her network, she manages to borrow but twice less than the desired amount and without insurance. “I find it absolutely disgusting. At that time, it put me in a state bordering on depression”she says.

A feeling shared by Alexis who had two cancers at 9 and 11 years old, from which he keeps the after-effects. The right to be forgotten does not exist for chronic diseases, he had to answer very detailed questionnaires: blood test, blood sugar, hemoglobin… A bank accepts his file but with an additional risk premium. “I pay 610 euros per year and my spouse pays 270 euros”, he points out. From now on, insurers will no longer be informed of illnesses beyond five years. This measure is expected to come into effect next month.
