Brazil was hit by dramatic bad weather on Saturday May 4. Around thirty deaths and dozens of missing have been recorded in the central state of Rio Grande do Sul, where mudslides and floods have caused widespread damage.

In São Sebastião do Caí, Brazil, four pregnant women were evacuated by helicopter on Friday May 3. While some managed to walk, others were transported on stretchers. They were all saved from deadly floods in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, before being evacuated. With the help of a tank, the soldiers promised by the federal government are participating in relief operations.

The worst climate disaster in its history

Friday May 3, President Lula reaffirmed the government’s support for this region of central Brazil. “Never before in the history of Brazil has there been such an amount of rain in one single day”, he observed. Half the state is affected by these floods. According to the governor, Rio Grande do Sul is experiencing the worst climatic disaster in its history and the heavy rains forecast for Saturday May 4 could worsen the situation. The river could reach 5 meters, while the historic record in 1941 was 4.71 meters. A provisional report shows 31 dead and 74 missing.
