The Les Républicains party will lose its status as the leading opposition group in the National Assembly, but sees itself as a possible partner for political agreements with the presidential majority.
It could be a historic defeat for Les Républicains. The party has had a series of electoral setbacks and the election on Sunday June 19 could well confirm this trend. The party still hopes to be able to weigh in on the debates, but some fear that, as in 2017, elected officials will leave after the elections and join the presidential majority. “If the French, as it seems to be taking shape, want a relative majority, it is because they do not want to know the same five-year term. If there are maneuvers to try to recover this or that elected official, this will accentuate the gap between politics and the French”estimated Xavier Bertrand, LR president of the Hauts-de-France region.
The party refutes the hypothesis of an agreement with the majority, but does not rule out discussions. “Does Emmanuel Macron still have to accept that this is not going to be an alliance? to help, this is going to be a new government pact in which the security, justice, fight against communitarianism and secularism issues, will be on the table of a political agreement”said Jean-François Copé, LR mayor of Meaux (Seine-et-Marne).
