Two years after the terrible fire in La Teste-de-Buch (Gironde), the forest reopens its doors to the public. Only 10% of the trees remain, but the vegetation that is barely growing back is closely monitored.
At the foot of the dune, glass is reflected from the burnt land. On the 7,000 hectares that went up in smoke two years ago, vegetation is growing back and the forest is regenerating. The La Teste-de-Buch estate in Gironde is secure. Its hiking trails have been accessible to the public again since July. While this reopening is a pleasure for tourists, it is a rebirth for hikers who are used to the area. “It’s coming back to life, that’s the most important thing. They did everything to make it work again.”observes a hiker.
The current images of the estate contrast with the apocalyptic images of July 2022. The fire had ravaged 80% of the forest and destroyed the campsites of the Pilat dune. At Les Flots Bleus, everything has been redone. Holidaymakers are back and the owner has found his smile again with the growing number of reservations. Next to the campsite, the forest is starting to regain color, the seeds of the burnt pines have germinated, and are now closely monitored.
