The Renault plant in Douai has just switched to all-electric, after 50 years of producing thermal cars. However, this change still raises questions in terms of employment.

100% electric production lines. No more heat engine here, only batteries. “You have 100% of the cars which are Renault Megane. We have an hourly rate of 52 vehicles/hour”, explains the general manager of ElectricCity, Luciano Biando. This line will then make it possible to manufacture other cars. In a few months, three additional models will leave the factory in Douai (North). A total of 300,000 vehicles are expected to be produced each year.

The plant is running underpowered

But for the time being, the factory is running at a slower pace. “We are coming out of three weeks of partial unemployment, we resumed the day before yesterday. We were called yesterday for a CSE, telling us that next week we are not working, next Monday either”, says David Dubois, secretary general of the CGT Renault Douai. This transition period is necessary according to the managing director, who is counting on a gradual rise in power.
