The remains of “Beryl” left up to 10 cm of rain in Montreal

The remains of the hurricane Beryl brought significant amounts of rain to southern Quebec on Wednesday, while some neighbourhoods in Montreal received up to 100 mm of rain in a few hours.

In a weather summary compiling the amounts of rain received up to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Environment Canada specified that the different sectors of Montreal received 50 to 100 mm of rain during the passage of the system.

The Montreal-Trudeau airport station measured 76 mm of rain, while the downtown station measured 56 mm.

Elsewhere in Quebec, still as of 9 p.m. Wednesday, Saint-Anicet had received 39 mm of rain, L’Assomption 35 mm, L’Acadie 32 mm, Frelighsburg 39 mm, Granby 27 mm, Gatineau 15 to 20 mm, Trois-Rivières 12 mm and Quebec 5 mm.

As rain continued to fall in other areas late in the evening and overnight, Environment Canada said its report will be updated later Thursday.

In Montreal, heavy rain caused numerous sewer backups, flooding under overpasses, as well as flooding in basements and garages. Portions of highways also had to be closed due to water accumulation.

As of Thursday morning, the remnants of Hurricane Beryl were in New Brunswick, where rainfall warnings were in effect.
