The 65-year-old man, identified by Australian media as Kevin Darmody, went on a fishing trip in the north of the state of Queensland (north-east of the country) on Saturday with residents of the region.

According to law enforcement, the group had fended off a crocodile so they could start fishing. Witnesses later heard the man “scream, yell very loudly, then a big splash”, said Mark Henderson, Inspector of Cairns Police. Rangers armed with rifles shot two crocodiles several meters long in Lakefield National Park, where the group had gathered.
