The 925 senators and deputies gathered this Monday, March 4 for a historic vote in Congress, under the presidency of Yaël Braun-Pivet. The constitutionalization of abortion was adopted with 780 votes.
A moment of harmony for History. This Monday, March 4 in Versailles (Yvelines), the vast majority of parliamentarians enshrined the right to abortion in the Constitution. The emotion can be seen on the faces, particularly among the representatives of feminist associations. The day was full of symbols. First that of Gabriel Attal alongside the son of Simone Veil, the one who, in 1974, included in the law the right to abortion, under the insults of an Assembly then very largely male.
Jubilation after the vote
“May the force of your applause for her cause thunder even louder than these insults and effectively do justice to Simone Veil,” said Gabriel Attal from the perch. A source of pride, especially for the women on the left who defended the text. Despite reluctance among some, the right and extreme right finally voted for the text. When the vote was announced, the activists who had come to watch the debate from the Place du Trocadéro exploded with joy.
