La Provence: the regional daily on strike after the dismissal of its director

Journalists from the daily La Provence have voted for an indefinite strike. They are protesting about the dismissal of their director after the publication of a front page in the newspaper which criticized Emmanuel Macron.

No La Provence newspaper on newsstands. The cause of this absence? An unlimited strike called by the editorial staff of the regional daily. Journalists are protesting against the dismissal of the editorial director, which took place on Friday March 22 after the “A front page”, published the day before, on Emmanuel Macron’s visit to the northern districts of Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône). We could read the title “He is gone and we are still here…”. These are the words of a resident of La Castellane that some readers interpreted as those of a drug trafficker, who would have been relayed with complacency.

Demonstrations planned for Monday

The editorial director, Gabriel d’Harcourt, had to apologize immediately in the columns of his newspaper. Apologies that made a large majority of journalists jump. They denounce editorial interference and demand the reinstatement of their director. It was the boss of CMA CGM, the Franco-Lebanese billionaire Rodolphe Saadé, who bought La Provence in the summer of 2022, who made this decision. Known to be close to Emmanuel Macron, he has just acquired Altice Media, the parent company of BFMTV. Demonstrations are announced for Monday morning, in Marseille and Paris.
