The next referendum on the new name of New Caledonia will take place in December despite the large number of refractories.

The request of the separatists to postpone this third referendum has remained a dead letter. Friday, November 12, Patrice Faure, High Commissioner of the Republic in New Caledonia, announced that everything would go as planned. “The third referendum will not be affected by health conditions since the health crisis is under control”, he assures. The separatists announced that they would not vote for this election.

The separatists wanted to postpone the vote to September 2022. They believe that the campaign is not fair because of many deaths and health restrictions. “You have to live normally, you have to act as if nothing is happening. You also have to avoid disturbing things”, says Pierre-Chanel Tutugoro, secretary general of the Caledonian Union and mayor of Ponérihouen in New Caledonia.
