The Detroit Red Wings overcame a three-goal deficit to defeat the Montreal Canadiens 5-4 in overtime Monday night at Little Caesars Arena.
With six skaters and no one to defend their net, the crowd favorites tied the score with just over a minute left in the third period. It was Lucas Raymond who scored this very important goal for the team which is desperately trying to stay in the playoff race in the Eastern Conference.
In overtime, Raymond did something again to end the match.
This duel got off to a flying start for the Habs. In his first career game and his second appearance on the ice, defender Lane Hutson did a good job to allow Brendan Gallagher to open the scoring. He therefore amassed his first assist and his first career point in the National League during this sequence.
Justin Barron also hit the target in the first period. His seventh goal of the current campaign doubled the visitors’ lead.
Rafael Harvey-Pinard, for his part, hit the mark in the second period. Gallagher also scored on a turnover in the middle period.
Jake Evans also collected three assists in this duel. This is the first time in his career that he has been complicit in so many successes in the same match.
Other Red Wings goals came from JT Compher (twice) and Alex DeBrincat. The first thwarted Samuel Montembeault in the first and second periods, while the second gave his team hope in the second half of the final third. The Habs goalie had a good game, stopping 30 pucks. At the other end of the ice, Alex Lyon was tested 20 times.
The CH and the Red Wings will meet on Tuesday evening, but at the Bell Center. This will be the last match of the season for both teams.
