Public Health France published a report on Wednesday, November 2, reporting a significant increase in the taking of antibiotics by the French. Journalist Saada Soubane takes stock of the 12/13 set.

After years of progress carried by a strong slogan, “Antibiotics are not automatic”the use of these drugs is on the rise. “The use of antibiotics has fallen for 10 years, but is skyrocketing again, +4.9% between 2020 and 2021 […] In 2021, there were 700 antibiotic prescriptions per 1,000 inhabitants. France is one of the countries that consumes the most antibiotics in Europe, behind Greece and Spain.says journalist Saada Soubane, present on the 12/13 set of France 3, Wednesday, November 2. “A significant increase, especially among children. Particularly protected during the pandemic, they are now faced with seasonal diseases: nasopharyngitis, bronchitis, flu”adds the journalist.

However, taking such drugs is completely ineffective against these diseases caused by viruses. “We remind you: antibiotics fight bacteria, but are ineffective against viruses”, emphasizes Saada Soubane. Especially since these sockets can be dangerous. “Taking too much alters our microbiota, an imbalance that can lead to chronic diseases”, warns the journalist. There is also a fear of seeing the development of antibiotic resistance with more resistant bacteria which would render the use of antibiotics ineffective.
