Ten years after the success of the multi-Caesar film Timbuktudirector Abderrahmane Sissako is back with Black Tea, which hits theaters Wednesday, February 28. A film which tells the story of Aya, a young Ivorian woman in her thirties played by Nina Melo who, on her wedding day, will finally refuse to get married and decide to go to China. She goes to work in a tea export shop with Cai, a 45-year-old Chinese man. They will then fall in love.

“The world is only encounters, it was only that. Except that we do not see a new world which has really been created between Africa and Asia. It is the time for Africa and Asia, (…) and I think it’s important that cinema talks about it”, estimates the director in 12/13 info.

“When Aya goes to China, she is not afraid to go there”

The director also explains that the “strength” of her character Aya lies in her “freedom to leave and meet the other, and not to be afraid of the other”. “The real problem today is the fear of others, and when Aya goes to China, she is not afraid to go there. Cai is also not afraid to welcome this young girl, to know it, to be open”he continues.
