The National Assembly observed a minute of silence this Friday, October 13 after the knife attack in Arras (Pas-de-Calais) which left one dead. As a whole, the political class has condemned this terrorist act but the political debate is already there.

From mid-afternoon this Friday, October 13, the National Rally reacted to the knife attack in Arras (Pas-de-Calais). According to him, the government has failed and he calls for the resignation of the Minister of the Interior. “When the State fails, when the government does not take the necessary measures, it is innocent people who pay the price with their lives”, declared Jean-Philippe Tanguy, deputy of the National Rally. This Friday evening, Gérald Darmanin rehearsed “not to have a shaking hand” and confirmed that the Arras attack was indeed linked to Hamas’s call for a day of rage.

Emmanuel Macron calls for unity

Political reactions followed one another throughout the day. At the National Assembly, the deputies present first observed a minute of silence, a time of unity very quickly overtaken by political divisions. Half-heartedly, Xavier Bertrand also pointed the finger at the government’s responsibility. “I think we need to go much further, especially with those we know to be dangerous”. For their part, the MoDem and EELV warned against any attempt at political recovery. The President of the Republic called on the French to remain united and stand together against the barbarity of Islamist terrorism.
