The ravages of steroids: a real “descent into hell” that killed his brother

Louis-Philippe Nadeau’s obsessive stubbornness to aim ever higher in the world of bodybuilding pushed him to consume steroids that got the better of his heart, when he was not yet 22 years old.

“For me, it was a shock. But my parents, they never really got over it. There was a before and an after for them,” confides Jasmin Nadeau to Log.

On the morning of May 15, 2013, his little brother Louis-Philippe came back from the gym visibly in bad shape and ill. Unaware that these were her last moments, her roommate at the time left their Montreal apartment for the afternoon.

It was on her return that she discovered the body of the young man, lifeless, on the floor of the accommodation. He succumbed to an acute coronary thrombosis, two weeks before his 22nd birthday, when he had no cardiac history.

THE BEGINNING OF THE END

According to his brother, his “descent into hell” began when he met a “pseudo-coach” who provided him with substances. Soon after, he won his first bodybuilding competition in 2012.

“It encouraged him to continue at full speed. He wanted to be the best, that was all he had in mind. It was an obsession, as if he was brainwashed“says Jasmin Nadeau, who was worried about her brother’s steroid use.

But at his second competition a few months later, Louis-Philippe was unable to place, which severely affected his morale.

“TIME BOMB”

The young man then fell into excesses of food and began to eat a lot, without respecting the diet he had given himself. Within weeks, he reportedly gained over 30 lbs.

According to coroner Louise Nolet, this excess food while consuming steroids – which have adverse effects on blood pressure and cholesterol in particular – played a role in his death.

“We knew he was jeopardizing his health, it was a time bomb. But we never thought he would die so suddenly,” sighs his brother.
