After two years without publishing due to a pandemic, the Égale à Égal festival found its audience. On the program, a month of discovery around 100% feminine cultural creations. The Poitou artist Héro Echo, who defends tooth and nail female rap against hip-hop machos, performed on November 13.
Almost a year ago Héro Echo, whose real name was Lucie, had a real nightmare. In December 2020, the young woman uploaded her clip Amazons. A feminist title that she had written a few years before after an argument with particularly misogynistic rappers. Harassed and threatened with death on social networks by neo-Nazis, the artist had to remove the video from YouTube for a few days in order to protect those around him and the extras who participated in the clip. “It’s still crazy that this little clip made with the means at hand has annoyed them to this point. For them to unleash so much rage and energy to persecute a poor rapper from Poitiers, is that I must have just typed “, analyzes the young woman today.
Hero Echo has been writing from a young age. She discovered the world of hip hop late, at the dawn of her thirties. And it is musical love at first sight. “Compared to contemporary poetry which can be hyper obscure, mystical with hidden meanings, rap is punchy, clear. There is also a whole rhythmic component which will make the words play”, explains the rapper. After the violent attacks she suffered with Amazons, the young woman needed an artistic break for a few months. Today, she has returned to the path of creation. She works in particular with Sexymerou. An album is in preparation. “It’s very emotional, poetic. We talk about life, love, suffering”, explains the musician.
For the moment, Héro Echo does not make a living from his music but hopes to sign with a label in order to be able to devote himself entirely to music.
Equal to Equal Festival, until December 10, in various artistic venues in Poitiers.
