The quirky humor of the Swiss collective Plonk&Replonk at the Rencontres du 9e Art d’Aix-en-Provence

The funny and absurd universe of Swiss artists Plonk&Replonk has arrived in the peaceful Bouches-du-Rhone village of La Roque-d’Anthéron. The friends of this group of publishers, known worldwide for their humorous photomontages, took over two places, the Abbey of Silvacane and the Gallery of the tourist office.

Founded in 1995 by Hubert and Jacques Froidevaux, two brothers, and their accomplice Miguel-Ange Morales, the collective became known in the 1990s by diverting Belle Epoque postcards. Worthy heirs of Monty Python or Pierre Desproges, they enjoy everything with fantasy.

At the Abbey of Silvacane, the Swiss trio has appropriated the architecture of the place to display their famous diversions of paintings from the Musée d’Orsay. An artistic delirium produced in 2016 on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Parisian museum. We can see in particular paintings by Millet or Axel Jeffe diverted. A shepherdess of the time with a mobile phone or a young girl posing with a finger in her nose. “There, for example, there is a general whose shadow is standing at attention. I like that one”recognizes Hubert Froidevaux “because it’s always good to nag the military given the news” he adds mischievously. A humor often banned in works of art. “They have been sponsored for centuries by the Church, which placed laughter on the side of evil, of Satan. It is still in the collective imagination” deplores Jean-Marc Bourry, curator of the exhibition.

We also laugh at the Gallery of the tourist office. The exhibition like beasts diverts Belle Epoque postcards by including animals in incongruous places. On the old port of Marseille, for example, the Plonk&Replonk collective is having fun beaching a pink whale. The opportunity for these Swiss artists to question us on environmental issues.
