Unlike the government, which no longer talks about cutting positions, the Parti Québécois (PQ) believes that the number of civil servants in the Quebec public service must be reduced by reducing controls and bureaucracy.
“I think we need to reduce the number of civil servants in terms of administrative control,” declared PQ leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon Thursday morning.
The government, he said, has “increased the layers of bureaucracy and control” in “the wake of the Gomery and Charbonneau commissions” and the desire to protect the government’s image.
These new controls “prevent people from working in the field,” he explained, referring to feedback received “on the ground” from community organizations, but also in health, education and the Youth Protection Department (DPJ).
This statement contrasts with the approach adopted by the CAQ government, which is no longer advocating job cuts as it has done in the past. Despite the $11 billion deficit weighing on public finances, Treasury Board President Sonia Lebel said Wednesday that she did not intend to reduce the number of civil servants.
